A brand a template couldn't capture
Trash Can Coffee isn't a normal coffee brand, and a normal coffee site wouldn't have worked for it. The name is a joke, the coffee isn't, and the whole brand is built around supporting sanitation crews rather than the usual specialty-coffee language of tasting notes and single-origin farms. A generic Shopify theme would have flattened all of that into another interchangeable coffee store.
- How do you build a site that's genuinely funny without it undercutting the product
- How do you tell a cause-driven story (supporting local garbage crews) without it feeling like a marketing bolt-on
- How do you organize two very different product lines, coffee and tea, without splitting the brand's identity
- How do you make customer reviews feel like proof, not decoration, for a brand that leans on humor
The Solution
Built from scratch around the brand's voice
We built the site from scratch on Shopify, designed entirely around the brand's voice rather than a template. The homepage opens with a hero video and the brand's own line, "Hand roasted. No apologies," then moves straight into the brand story and the sanitation-crew mission before it ever asks for a sale. Coffee and tea are split into their own category cards so each product line still reads clearly, and real customer reviews are surfaced with names and locations to back up the humor with proof that people actually buy and like it. Every section, copy included, was built to sound like the brand talking, not a store selling coffee.

What changed
- Gave the brand a site that sounds and feels like the brand, not a generic coffee template
- Made the sanitation-crew mission part of the shopping experience, not a separate about page nobody reads
- Let coffee and tea both stand on their own without diluting the brand's single, distinct voice
